Stu slays Slater, then mows down Medina at Quiksilver Pro
IT TOOK current world champion Adriano De Souza to eliminate former Lennox Head surfer Mikey Wright from the Quiksilver Pro at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast.
Meanwhile, the giant-killing run of Lennox Head product Stu Kennedy continued when he beat 2014 world champion Gabriel Medina late in the afternoon to advance to the fourth round.
It is the second former champion he has eliminated in as many days after beating 11-time world champion Kelly Slater on Sunday.
Wright had already won his first round heat against De Souza and American Kolohe Andino to advance directly to the third round yesterday.
It looked like an upset was on the cards again when Wright registered a second wave score of 7.87 before De Souza stormed home with a 9.27 to claim the win.
The Brazilian finished with a combined wave score of 16.17 (out of a possible 20) while Wright was forced to settle for a 14.04.
Mikey is the younger brother of Owen and Tyler Wright and received a wildcard into the competition.
Tyler has already advanced to the quarter-finals of the Roxy Pro while Owen is missing in action for the first half of the season with concussion issues.
Meanwhile, the Skullcandy Oz Grom Open will officially return for a fifth straight year at Lennox Head in July.
