Strong field for Summerland Series

ONE of the biggest events on the Northern Rivers bowls calendar returns to Ballina from December 27.

The Summerland Singles and Pairs have total prize money of $20,000, and will be held at the Ballina Bowling Club.

The Pairs will be played first with sectional play on December 27 and 28 and the finals on December 29.

Then the Singles will take over with sectionals on January 2 and 3 and the finals on January 4.

Ballina Bowling Club sports co-ordinator Tony Scott said this year the field is very strong with a host of local, State, national and international players having entered.

He said bowls legend Ian Schuback would play, joining ComfitPro Taylor Bowls managing director Walter Jacobs in the Pairs.

“We’re quite chuffed to have him playing,” Scott said.

“Having him play in the Summerland Pairs is a big drawcard for us.”

State junior singles champion Aaron Teys and State open singles champion Mick Anderson, both of the Ballina club, will also play.

Scott said the club was looking forward to the event.

“It’s one of the premier events on the Australian bowls calendar,” he said.

“It’s a quality field, the green is in top shape, and the weather forecast is good.”
