Readers back action to defend Base Hospital staffing levels
AN OVERWHELMING majority of The Northern Star's Facebook readers have come out in support of Lismore Base Hospital Women's Care Unit nurses and midwives who have taken industrial action over staffing cuts.
Some Facebook readers, including Dot Lendon, Kez Reeves and Dave Copperthwaite, said they'd recently spent time in the Base Hospital and had found the nurses to be fantastic and caring.
"Lismore nurses are wonderful ... sick and tired of the government stuffing them around," Dot said.
Lee Jackson said: "You shouldn't mess with those who are there to help heal us and bring our babies into the world.
"Nurses do an amazing job, don't take that for granted. Leave the health system alone. If anything give them a raise, most of us would be dead without them."
The discussion turned political as Jasmine Adams said: "Didn't all the political advertising I just saw in the last election say funding was going to be improved? Guess you can't trust pollies ... who'd have thought?"
Glenda Martin said it was a hard enough job for nurses and midwives as it was without cutting their hours too.
"Cutting hours only burns nurses out even more and the job is changing enough without putting this much pressure on nurses and midwives," she said.
"Patient care is the most important part of a nurse or midwife's job. Do you really want to risk the care that these amazing people give?
"Does something bad have to happen for management and government to wake up to themselves and realise we need more nurses and midwives, not less?
"Nurses and midwives are overworked as it is and more and more demands are being put on them every day."
