Stosur wants strong start to 2013 with French Open win

SOMETHING about Paris seems to put a spring in the step of Sam Stosur.

While her only grand slam tournament win came in the 2011 US Open, the Gold Coaster has an excellent record on the red clay at Roland Garros.

Stosur made her first grand slam semi-final there in 2009 (losing to Svetlana Kusnetsova), before going down to Francesca Schiavone in the 2010 final.

The Aussie went out in the third round in 2011, before blowing another great opportunity when beaten in three sets in the semi-finals last year by Italian surprise packet Sara Errani.

Stosur begins her 2013 campaign tonight with a match she should win against Japanese 42-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm.

Day one proved tough going for our men, with Lleyton Hewitt, Marinko Matosevic and James Duckworth all beaten.

Hewitt fought valiantly against No.15 seed and hometown hero Gilles Simon, eventually going down 3-6 1-6 6-4 6-1 7-5.

Matosevic lost to No.4 seed David Ferrer 6-4 6-3 6-4, while Duckworth was beaten by unseeded Slovakian Blaz Kavcic 6-2 6-2 6-2.
