Stosur advances at rainy US Open

REIGNING US Open champion Samantha Stosur began her title defence with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Croatia's Petra Martic on Monday at the Grand Slam showdown.

It was a mixed day for the Australians, with Stosur and Casey Dellacqua having good wins, but Jarmila Gajdosova and Olivia Rogowska bowing out of the tournament.

Early on, Stosur's match was one of only four to be completed on the Flushing Meadows hardcourts before rain arrived, a nagging reminder that the men's final has been played a day late for the past four years as a result of downpours during the tournament fortnight.

Play resumed after the loss of more than two hours' court time.

Also in the women's draw, Russia's Maria Sharapova (number three seed) breezed through to the second round in 67 minutes, defeating Hungary's Melinda Czink 6-2, 6-2. Sharapova, the 2006 champion, will now face Spain's Lourdes Dominguez Lino.
