Story of soldier killed in Somalia to be shared with nation

LIZ Hanns will be feeling particularly proud on Monday.

The Ballina woman is the mother of Lance Corporal Shannon McAliney, who died in 1993 following an accident when the 21-year-old was serving in Somalia.

The Australian War Memorial in Canberra each day has an event called The Last Post Ceremony in which a soldier's story is told.

On Monday, Chief of the Defence Force, General David Hurley, in his last official role in the job, will tell the story of Lance Coporal McAliney.

L/Cpl Alinay joined the army in 1988 after attending Ballina High School.

He served in the 1st Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment, under General Hurley.

Liz and Shannon's stepfather Kevin Hanns will attend the Change of Command parade in Canberra.

"It's a real honour," Mrs Hanns said.

The Last Post Ceremony will be streamed live via the Australian War Memorial's website at 4.55pm on Monday, June 30.
