Storms hit four US states so far

A STRING of deadly storms over the weekend spawned tornadoes, floods and devastation in four southern US states.

At least 14 people were killed and dozens injured, and the storms could put millions more at risk as they move north.

The storms tore through Texas, Missouri, Arkansas and Mississippi, with tornadoes ripping roofs off houses, uprooting trees and tossing cars "around like toys”, one witness said.

Floods swept cars off roads. Rescuers in Arkansas searched for an 18-month-old girl and a four-year-old boy who were in a car swept off a bridge by floodwaters.

The storms were expected to move into Alabama and continue towards Michigan. There is a severe weather warning of isolated tornadoes, high winds and large hail for 22 million people in six states from North Carolina to New York.

Search teams were going door to door after at least three tornadoes touched down in Texas on Saturday, leaving widespread damage in a rural area about 100km east of Dallas.

A woman died when a tree fell on a mobile home in Arkansas and a two-year-old girl died in Tennessee after being struck by a soccer goalpost launched by heavy winds.

Hundreds of roads were closed and at least 136 water rescues were carried out.
