Storm warning

THE WEATHER Channel has issued a warning for severe thunderstorms for the Northern Rivers this afternoon.

According to watherchannel.com.au severe thunderstorms will redevelop over north-east NSW this afternoon as the extended spell of stormy weather continues in the lead up to Christmas.

The Storms - which are expected every day for the remainder of the week - have the potential to become severe this afternoon in some areas due to abundant instability, particularly across the NSW northern slopes, ranges and coast.

Flash flooding is the main concern due to expected high rainfall caused by light upper level winds and subsequent slow moving storms.

Damaging winds and hail are also possible.

The pattern should shift on Sunday when the upper trough is expected to move off the coast.

This will temporarily reduce the chance of storms but another expected trough should cause further thunderstorms from Boxing Day.
