Storm damaged Lismore Hospital site remains off-limits

WORK on the Lismore Base Hospital redevelopment has been put on hold until at least the mid-next week while the damage from Sunday night's supercell storm is cleaned up.

A spokeswoman from NSW Health Infrastructure said exclusion zones were still in place at the site, which would be reopened as "remediation works are completed and structural certifications are obtained".

Loose scaffolding on the main tower has been removed since the storm, but principle contractor John Holland is still consulting with engineers before the scaffolding on the maternity ward can be safely removed.

"At this stage the contractors expect the site to reopen late next week, weather dependent," the spokeswoman said.

"Given the contingency built into projects of this scale and complexity, Health Infrastructure don't expect the completion date to be impacted."

Executive Director of the Richmond Clarence Health Service Group Lynne Weir said staff had acted quickly to make alternate arrangements for women giving birth at the hospital.

"This has not impacted on the functionality of the maternity ward or caused additional strain on the hospital," she said.

"I want to reassure women who are planning to have their babies at Lismore Base Hospital that it is business as usual."
