Stopping CSG top priority: Battista

CHRISTIAN Democrat candidate for Lismore Gianpiero Battista said Northern Rivers residents would have a "better chance for coal seam gas in this region to be stopped" if he was elected.

Two Christian Democrats already hold the balance of power in the state's upper house and it is an issue the former Lismore councillor says is a top priority.

Less clear is Mr Battista's policy on the sale of state assets like electricity.

"It's not an issue for this area. But we need to have all the facts first (before we make a decision)," he said.

He likened his election chances to the story of David and Goliath, pointing out that David won in the end.

Also, since declaring his candidacy in January, Mr Battista has come under fire for comments against gay marriage.

"These are my beliefs," he said, standing by his previous comments. "At the end of the day I want people to vote not because I'm a Christian, I want people to vote because I'm the right person who cares about his community."
