Stoinis smashes way into ODI record books

CRICKET: Marcus Stoinis' epic match at Eden Park has blasted Aussie legends out of the record books.

Stoinis took 3-49 with the ball and blasted 146 from 117 balls with the bat, placing his side into the box seat against New Zealand in the first ODI.

Needing only seven runs to win with one wicket remaining, his fairytale return to the ODI side wasn't to be.

A sharp piece of fielding from Kane Williamson ended the show, running Josh Hazlewood out at the non-strikers end as the crowd lost their minds.

Despite falling short of single-handedly claiming an impossible victory, Stoinis racked up a number of huge ODI records with both bat and ball.

He became the first Australian player to ever take three wickets and score a century in the same match, narrowly falling short of Dave Callaghan's world record of 169 and 3-32 against New Zealand in 1994.

It was also the highest Australian innings from a number seven batsman, overtaking James Faulkner (116) and Matthew Wade (100).

He also hit the second highest amount of sixes by an Australia (11), falling short of Shane Watson's effort in 2011 which saw him blast 15 over the rope against Bangladesh.

As a team, Australia are now the first to lose three consecutive games at Eden Park, adding to their bizarre World Cup loss in 2015.
