A HAT-TRICK to Steve Boothroyd helped Northern Star defeat Ballina 5-1 in a scrappy game of A-grade men's hockey on Saturday.

Coraki defeated East Lismore 4-1 in the other leg of the double-header at Hepburn Park, Goonellabah.

Star got in front in the sixth minute when Tom Vantaggiato converted a penalty corner.

After that they missed opportunity after opportunity for the next 26 minutes.

Ballina also had chances to level up but had no luck.

Just before half-time Boothroyd smashed a shot past Ryan in goals and Star went to the break up 2-0.

Boothroyd scored again just after half-time and a couple of minutes later he found the net for his third.

Harris made it 5-0 when he converted a well-worked penalty corner.

With 15 to go Smith back-sticked a superb goal to peg one back for Ballina.

Coraki and East Lismore without key players.

Joel Johnson got a touch on a screaming pass from Jamie Hetherington to open Easts' account mid-way through the first half.

Both sides had their chances but couldn't break the defence before half-time.

It was more of the same in the early part of the second half until Coraki received three consecutive penalty corners and Tom Brown converted the third.

A minute later Harley Brown was on the end of a series of eliminating passes to get Coraki's second and put them in front.

Zach Clark swatted in a a penalty corner rebound to stretch the lead to 3-1.

It was all Coraki then, and Easts did well to keep the scoreline respectable.

Coraki scored their fourth goal after the whistle from another penalty corner.

Goalkeeper Luke Kelso had another exceptional game for East Lismore.
