Stephen Gort carries local hopes

MULLUMBIMBY’S Stephen Gort will carry local hopes in the Lismore Easter Tennis Classic when he meets Mark Draper in the men’s open singles final today.

Gort swept past Pat Flynn 6-4 6-1 in a semi-final at the Lismore Tennis Club yesterday, setting up a showdown with the veteran.

Draper was outpointed by Josh Barrenechea early in their semi-final but he turned the tables on his fellow Queenslander to win 4-6 6-3 6-2 in a high quality match.

In the women’s open singles semi-finals, Erin Billett defeated Eden Cartwright 6-1 2-6 7-6 while Nana Miyakawa accounted for Britney Huxley 6-1 6-0.

There were a few rain interruptions yesterday but all scheduled matches were able to be completed.

In Division 2, Lismore’s Luke Edwards will meet Adam Berrada in the men’s final after defeating another local Nathan Moore 6-1 6-1 in their semi-final, while Berrada took out Mick Sherry 7-5 6-1.

Lismore’s Emily Watson late yesterday was assured of a spot in the Division 2 women’s singles final.
