Step out for charity walk
LOCAL businesspeople and the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter have challenged businesses in the Northern Rivers to sign up teams to walk 12, 25 or 37km between Ballina and Byron Bay for charity.
The idea is to challenge teams of four people to participate in the Ballina to Byron charity walk on Sunday, May 20 as a team-building activity.
Andrew Lowrey, partner at Blackburn Prior Accountants, explained that the helicopter rescue service was a "great service and we are lucky to have one based in our town".
His company has been involved with Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter for over 25 years through payroll deductions, and it will have at least one team of four people in this year's walk.
"We should issue a challenge to some of the other professional businesses in the area to join in and participate. There are another four or five accounting firms in Lismore who could get involved," Mr Lowrey said.
Warren Walsh, branch manager of Westpac Lismore, is also preparing to lead a team from Ballina to Byron.
He conceded that the challenge would "allow our team to bond".
"It is good to get out and help others, but also it is good to get out and do something as a team outside work," he said.
Asked about the level of fitness of his team, Mr Walsh explained: "We have some people in the team who are very fit, and others like me who are practicing by walking to the coffee room and back".
The Ballina to Byron Bay Charity Walk, presented by Woollam Constructions, is a new fundraising event for Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter in Northern NSW, as part of their 30th anniversary celebration.
Support teams will be assisting participants along the route with water, sunscreen and first aid.
