Step into swing and turn your world upside down
MORE and more people are getting into the "swing" of swing dancing.
If you were at Lismore Shopping Square on Saturday morning you may have seen Karen and Lionel Gayford of Lismore and 18 other swing dancers surprising shoppers with a swing- dancing flash mob.
"It was fantastic, it was a blast," Mrs Gayford said.
"It's gone viral on YouTube!"
The swing dancers of Hooked on Swing Dancing Lismore said the flash mob was a way to let the public know that they are ready for a new year of classes.
Mr Gayford said they've seen a rise in interest over the past few years.
"There has definitely been a growth in all forms of dance in the last few years thanks to all the dance shows on television," he said.
So what's great about swing dancing?
"Everything," Mrs Gayford said, "The music, the clothes, the expression, the partnership."
"In not many sports are you so reliant on your partner."
Mr Gayford said they're all friends between the different dance schools.
"In the words of Frankie Manning, the granddaddy of swing dance, he said that if the United Nations could bottle what we have in swing dancing, the world would be a happier place."
"If you can walk, you can dance," Mr Gayford said.
Hooked on Swing Dancing Lismore will have a 7pm Foundation class, a 7.40pm Intermediate class, and an 8.10pm Advanced class each Wednesday night at the Lismore Workers Heights Bowls Club. Social dancing follows the classes.
Cost is $8 per person per night or six weeks special for $40. Phone Karen on 6621 7921 or visit their Facebook page.
