State versus state on roller derby rink

MOTHER of four Celeste Oss-Emer became addicted to roller derby when she first heard about the sport four years ago.

Oss-Emer who goes by the roller derby alias AmazonAgetyA is the captain of the Northern Rivers roller derby team.

They will play their first game of the season against the Toowoomba City Rollers at the Lismore Skate Rink on Saturday night.

"I loved skating as a 10 year old and after high school that was it for me with sport," Oss-Emer said.

"Once I put the skates on again at 30 that was it, I've been addicted ever since.

"I love the team atmosphere and the physical side of things."

Oss-Emer who came up with the alias AmazonAgetyA from when her brothers called her 'The Amazon' in backyard wrestling when they were kids is hopeful of recruiting new players this season.

The club will host a recruitment night at the Bridge Street Skate Rink on Thursday between 5.30pm and 7.30pm.

The Northern Rivers team is undefeated at home and took out the Northern Coast Coalition Championship last year.

The competition includes teams from Tweed Heads, Byron Bay, Coffs Harbour and Yamba.

The first game will see Northern Rivers play Byron Bay on May 4.

"It's exciting to see people take up the sport and hopefully we get some new players this year," Oss-Emer said.

"I think we've got the word out and we've had some good support from locals and sponsors.

"We've got players in our team from Kyogle, Casino, Lismore, Goonellabah and Ballina so that is a good reflection of how we're growing."
