Stars well behaved at American Music Awards

AFTER her recent antics at the MTV Video Music Awards and the European Music Awards, Miley Cyrus was surprisingly well behaved at last night's American Music Awards.

The white pantsuit Cyrus wore on the red carpet and the grey tank-style cat print bikini she wore on stage were both relatively low-key compared to the nude-coloured bodysuits and latex the singer has been wearing recently.

Cyrus first made world headlines for twerking with Robin Thicke on stage at the MTV VMAs and then more recently smoked what appeared to be a joint on stage while accepting an award at the EMAs.

Even Rihanna kept things simple on the red carpet with a black bra-style top and fish-tail black lace skirt.

Perhaps it was LA's cooler winter temperatures that inspired the celebrities to cover up, with many of the women opting for full-length gowns rather than short dresses.

Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake and One Direction were the big winners of the night.

Country pop princess Swift continues her domination of the genre, taking home four awards including the top honour of the night, Artist of the Year.

Timberlake, who returned from a musical hiatus earlier this year with his acclaimed album The 20/20 Experience, took home three awards, while One Direction and rap duo MackleMore & Ryan took home two gongs each.

The three-hour awards show featured some elaborate entrances and performances, including Lady Gaga arriving on a man-powered puppet horse and Katy Perry creating a colourful Japanese garden on stage.

But Cyrus still grabbed plenty of attention for her performance themed around the internet's much-loved and memed subject: cats.

A giant projection featured a cute kitten crying diamonds during her song's emotional climax.
