STARS on a roll
THE names ScaryIsh, AmazonAgetyA and Twisted Nikkers are just a few that make up the Northern Rivers Roller Derby Battle-STARS team.
After establishing a club in Lismore last year, the team has added another feather to the cap by taking out the grand final of the North Coast Derby Coalition with a resounding 308-63 win over the Coffs Coast Derby Dolls at the weekend.
The team went through the season undefeated, playing games against opposition from Byron Bay, Tweed Heads, Coffs Harbour and the Clarence Valley.
The Northern Rivers team has players from Lismore, Ballina, Nimbin, Casino and Kyogle.
World War Wen was a standout in the grand final, scoring 25 points, with Kimmando Kim picking up the most valuable player award.
And with another season coming up in February, the Battle-STARS are showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
"We'll be doing a recruitment drive and getting back into training just after Christmas," Battle-STARS bench manager Linda Kmita said.
"It's a tough sport, but it's great for fitness and awesome to be a part of."
Roller derby pundits claim it to be the fastest growing women's sport in Australia with 80 leagues stretching across the country.
They play almost all year round and take women of all shapes and sizes.
"It's getting more popular day by the day and it's not just a sport about beating each other up, there is a strategy to it," Kmita said.
"Everyone wears mouthguards, knee pads, elbow pads and wrist pads."
Other members of the successful team are Dreaded Kat, The Hitcher, Batter'd Sav, Flat Strap, Gloria Swank, Madam Flash, Nora the Explora and Sydeshow Ali.
A beginner's guide to roller derby
ROLLER derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five rollers skating in the same direction around a track.
Both teams designate a scoring player who scores points by lapping members of the opposition. The scoring player is called the jammer with blockers and a pivot.
Teams attempt to assist their own jammer while hindering the opposition.
First became popular in the United States in the 1940s and is under consideration for the Olympic Games in 2020.
