Star View: The Melbourne Cup

YESTERDAY, offices around the country downed tools at 3pm to watch the Melbourne Cup, the horse race that stops a nation in its tracks.

While it takes a lot to get our editorial department to stop work for long, The Northern Star was no different and staff sat and watched the race, cheering their horses on, just like everyone else.

But I was one of the lucky ones and attended a lunch held at the Southern Cross University for the charity, Our Kids.

The working committee for Our Kids should be congratulated. They worked all year to make it a splendid day for everyone.

The room looked amazing with flowers and tables dressed just as beautifully as you would find in any Melbourne Cup marquee.

The ladies attending the lunch should be also congratulated for the effort they all put in.

But, most of all, the local businesses who donated goods and services to help to raise funds for Our Kids deserve to be thanked.

There were 100 or more prizes given away and each one was very valuable.

It is heart-warming to see businesses being so generous and giving, especially in these hard economic times.

Our region is certainly blessed with such generosity and community spirit.
