Star snogs her way into the spotlight

GEORGIA Groome has it made.

Not only is she being touted as the next Keira Knightley, but in her most recent films she also gets to snog "well-fit" boys and get paid for it.

After shooting to notoriety in the 2006 film London to Brighton, the teenager from Nottingham in the UK has found a whole new level of fame in the new film Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging.

This coming-of-age story from the same director as Bend It Like Beckham and based on the award-winning book by Louise Rennison takes a look into the life of teenage girl Georgia Nicholson, her relationship with her cat (Angus), whether she should wear a thong, and how she can master the perfect snogging technique.

While the film is definitely aimed at the teenage-girl demographic, it has been well received by audiences of all ages in the UK, where it opened earlier this year.

"We never wanted it to just be a teen film," Groome said.

"It was always going to have a wide appeal."

And despite already having the big screen experience with her first film, Georgia still got an attack of the panics the first time she watched the movie.

"The first time I watched it I hated it," she said.

"I thought, 'oh no'. I panicked and thought I could have done better."

In the film, Georgia's life is thrown into a spin with the arrival of gorgeous brothers Robbie (Aaron Johnson) and Tom (Steve Jones) at Georgia's school, and she and her best friend Jas (Eleanor Tomlinson) are determined to snap them up.

Georgia's plan goes awry when she discovers that Robbie (the object of her desire) is already seeing her arch nemesis, 'slaggy' Lindsay.

So Georgia amps the plan up a notch and heads off to the school's resident snogging expert Peter Dyer (Liam Hess) - the man, the myth the legend - who teaches her the various levels of snogging in what is sure to be one of those wonderful scenes that go down in cinematic history.

From there, Georgia's pursuit of Robbie takes typical teenage turns with ups and downs and the predictable happy ending, but along the way is a heart-warming story about a young girl learning some valuable life lessons.

And Groome said she is proud of the way the story came out and is generally happy with the way her first teenage comedy performance came across on screen.

"I still worry about it," she said.

"I still watch it and pick it to pieces, but as a whole we all watch it together and it is something special.

"We had a lot of fun. We all worked so hard on it and sweated and cried."

Despite the fact she has been heralded as the next Keira Knightley, she remains humble and grounded about her new found fame.

She even went back to school after filming finished.

"I was forced to settle down for a few months and finish school," she said.

"So I have finished all my exams at school and I have a couple of films lined up in a few months.

"I am just having a great time at the moment sitting back and looking at my options.

"I don't read every script because we are careful about what I do. I don't want to be doing all the same thing."

And if you are wondering how to master the perfect snog, well, Peter Dyer explains it perfectly.

"Number One is the standard kiss. Number Two is with movement, when the boy goes in, the girl always goes the other way. The boy leads and the girl always fits in. Number Three is with tongues, which makes it a health-and-safety issue.

"The secret is to strike the right balance between yielding and giving. Start slowly, like a turtle, not a lizard, and definitely avoid washing machine syndrome."

Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging is now showing in Sunshine Coast cinemas.
