Emotion-laden images lands Star photographer in award finals

NORTHERN Star photographer Marc Stapelberg is a finalist in a prestigious international newspaper award scheme.

In the news category was Marc's photo showing the heartbreaking moment a friend, Neil Fitzgerald of the Gold Coast, mourned the loss of surfer Tadashi Nakahara in a shark attack earlier this year at Ballina.

The image of local legend Maude Boat dressed in a zebra outfit was a finalist in the portrait section, while a detailed photo essay was selected in the features category.

The essay dealt with local Bill Hawkins, who was badly injured in a car accident and has suffered from "lock-in" syndrome for the past 25 years.

Although Bill is unable to speak, he is aware of his surroundings and is capable of limited movement.

Marc said the people who cared for Bill in Lismore, called Bill's Team, were always in need of more volunteers.
