Star joins appeal for donations
THE Northern Star has joined forces with cancer charity Our House to fit out new accommodation units for cancer patients and their families at Lismore.
Our House needs $500,000 to furnish its newly built accommodation at Hunter St.
The units will be used by North Coast cancer patients and their families as they undergo treatments such as radiotherapy at Lismore Base Hospital.
The Northern Star has helped Our House develop an advertising campaign in hope of gathering equipment and money.
The Northern Star will tomorrow run a checklist of items needed to fit out the units, offering Northern Rivers residents and businesses the chance to "buy" items for the Our House project, ranging from kettles to mattresses.
The list has run several times over the past fortnight, drawing donations worth close to $20,000. However, there are still plenty of things to buy.
"It was an initiative The Northern Star and Our House worked on together to help the public be aware and to give them an opportunity to donate," The Northern Star marketing manager Heather Williams said.
"It allows people to do something tangible."
Our House director Rebekka Battista said the campaign and ensuing donations will allow the units to be furnished to a decent standard. Since the campaign kicked off a fortnight ago, about $18,500 has been raised.
"People can pledge the money or say what they want it spent on," Ms Williams said.
"Someone has already donated $2000 for the play equipment."
The Northern Star has given $25,000 in-kind to implement the campaign.
"We couldn't have done this without The Northern Star. I'm just so grateful," Ms Battista said.
Ms Battista hoped to cross the final furnishing items off Our House's list next week.
