Star choice: Georgia’s summer snap wins her $700 Nikon kit
BALLINA teenager Georgia Wheatland is now the proud owner of a flash new Nikon camera kit after winning The Northern Star's I AM Summer competition.
We were tasked with sorting through more than 150 photos submitted by readers, looking for the shot that was not only eye-catching but summed up summer on the North Coast.
Northern Star photographer Marc Stapelberg said of 15-year-old Georgia's snap: "The photo fits the criteria of the competition by showing a vibrant, energetic and exciting image that invokes the sense of summer.
"The sense of the local area, Julian Rocks, the boat and people, and the colour all draw the viewer in and the energy is infectious."
For her photo, titled Dive into Summer, Georgia won a Nikon D3300 DSLR with AF-S 18-55mm VR 11 lens, valued at more than $700.
Georgia took the shot of herself jumping into the water while on a diving excursion at Byron Bay using a GoPro, and said while that was the only time she'd ever been diving, and she'd love to do it again.
"We got some pretty cool shots underwater, but this one was probably the best," she said.
"My mum saw the competition in the paper, and she knew I had some pretty cool shots, and my sister's getting into photography, so she thought maybe I could enter one of my photos and if I won (my sister and I) could share the camera."
Asked what summer meant to her, Georgia said: "When I think of summer I think of the beach. Being with friends at the beach. It (also) makes me think of summer fruits (and) being with family and friends."
