SOS for Salvation Army

THE Salvation Army has called for a surge in donations to match the surge in demand it has experienced over the past year.

Salvos Stores general manager Neville Barrett said there had been a 20 per cent jump in sales nationwide, in part due to an expansion in the service's customer base.

Money raised through the Salvos' op-shops funds community service work.

Fire warning

RESIDENTS should brace for a severe fire season across the State, NSW Premier Nathan Rees has warned.

Mr Rees said fire authorities were prepared for the fire season, but warned a looming El Niño cycle on the back of low winter rainfall and a warm spring pointed to what could be 'our worst summer in years'.

“It is vital that families take the time to clear flammable materials from their property, including cleaning out gutters and cutting back shrubs and trees,” he said.

In the coming weeks the State Government would launch an education campaign on new warning systems developed after the Black Saturday fires in Victoria.

Manager awarded

CLARENCE Valley Council sewerage augmentation program project manager Geoff Gorton, from NSW Public Works, has been given the NSW Project Management Achievement Award by the Australian Institute of Project Management.

Mr Gorton will compete in the AIPM National Project Management Achievement Awards at Adelaide in October.
