Stabbed Mackay mum 'shielded' baby from attack

FAMILY have told of how the young mum allegedly stabbed by her former boss tried to shield her 10-month-old baby while she was being attacked.

Teagan Moore, 21, had been placed on life support following Monday's stabbing, but her family say she has since had ventilators removed and opened her eyes, News Corp reported.

Police allege that South Australian bakery owner Jason Wayne Greatbatch flew more than 2000km to Mackay on Sunday he stabbed Ms Moore and her fiance Jake Burgess, 23.

Mr Burgess' mother, Donna Meyers, told The Courier Mail the family were still trying to make sense of the traumatic attack, which happened at 12.15am on Monday.

She said reports that Ms Moore had accidentally dropped her son Nixon when she was stabbed were incorrect.

The young mother had tightly held onto her son to try to protect him while she was being attacked, Ms Meyers said.

Doctors have told the family Ms Moore survived due to the great work of Mackay Hospital staff who kept her alive until she could be flown to Brisbane to undergo major surgery.

"She's going to make it, I know she will," Ms Meyers said.

Ms Moore's mother Donna Bateman told Channel 9 news that she thought her daughter was "going to die".

"She's so young, she's got so much to live for," Ms Bateman said.

Mr Burgess remains in the Mackay Hospital, alert and coherent but "in a lot of pain," she said.

Mr Greatbatch, from Ceduna, has been charged with attempted murder, entering a premises with intent, acts intended to maim and common assault.

Mrs Meyers confirmed that Ms Moore had worked as a bakery assistant for Mr Greatbatch from the age of 14 to about 16.

Her daughter and Mr Burgess  had lived on the Gold Coast for approximately four years before relocating to Mackay a year ago.

The young family had been living with her at her home at Kuttabul, northwest of Mackay, to save money.

Ms Moore now faces months of rehabilitation following the alleged stabbing.
