Spurs too strong for leader Manchester City

FOOTBALL: Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino says his team still has plenty of work to do to consolidate its position in the higher echelons of the English Premier League despite defeating leader Manchester City 2-0.

Spurs ended City's unbeaten run and continued its own in a dominating display over Pep Guardiola's team at White Hart Lane to move to second, one behind the Sky Blues.

While satisfied with the performance, Pochettino said there was still work to be done.

"We need to follow this after the international match and we have more tough games after the international break,” he said.

"If you play like we did today with passion and aggression then you will always have a chance.

"It is always about mentality.

"That is what helps us run and play as we want to.

"The collective performance was strong. It is too early to take this into the table yet. We are still creating our philosophy.”

Spurs dominated from the start and went in front in the ninth minute when Aleksandar Kolarov sliced Danny Rose's cross into his own net.

Dele Alli doubled the lead eight minutes before half-time with a cool finish from Son Heung-min's pass.

Spurs striker Erik Lamela also had a penalty saved by Claudio Bravo as Spurs eased home.

Manchester United dominated its game with Stoke City at Old Trafford but a number of missed chances cost Jose Mourinho's team all three points.

United took a deserved lead through substitute Anthony Martial but Joe Allen capitalised on a spill from David de Gea to snatch an unlikely point to move Stoke off the bottom of the ladder.

Arsenal had a controversial 1-0 win over Burnley at Turf Moor.

The Gunners scored a controversial winner in added time as Laurent Koscielny appeared to handle Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's shot before the ball crossed the line.

The match between EPL champion Leicester City and Southampton finished 0-0 at King Power Stadium.
