Spring-like start to winter
DESPITE a cold and rainy morning, it didn't feel like the first day of winter in Lennox Head by lunchtime yesterday – just ask local Larissa Cartwright.
She took her one-year-old son, Finn, to a nearby park with fellow Lennox resident Andy Newton and his 14-month-old son, Banjo Newton.
“It's just so nice to be out and about in the sunshine,” she said.
“When it's cold and rainy it can be really hard to keep the kids entertained because they're stuck inside all day.
“You feel like you're always saying ‘don't touch that, put that down'.
“But the weather was so beautiful, so I thought we'd get out and enjoy it while we still can.”
The Northern Rivers was issued with a severe weather warning yesterday morning, but it was cancelled by 11am.
Now, mild and mostly sunny days look set to continue for the rest of the week.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Lismore will reach a top of 19 degrees today, but temperatures will hit 22 degrees tomorrow and Saturday, with Sunday peaking at 23 degrees.
Casino's temperature will hit 23 degrees on Saturday and Sunday.
It will be slightly cooler in Byron Bay, which will reach tops of 20 and 21 degrees over the next few days.
Ballina's winter weather came a little bit early – the town had its coldest night of the year so far on May 31, with the temperature getting down to a chilly 4.9 degrees.
The weather bureau's manager of Climate Prediction Services, Dr Andrew Watkins, said with the end of La Nina, conditions through the winter months would remain fairly neutral.
