Sports car destroyed in seconds

A RARE car was destroyed on Wednesday afternoon when it burst into flames on Teven Road.

This was followed by several explosions which shocked nearby residents.

The Queensland driver was heading to visit his mother at Alstonville when he noticed smoke coming from under the bonnet of his 1986 red Pontiac Fiero V6.

Garry Fenton saw the drama unfold right outside his Teven Road property.

After rushing to check on the driver’s welfare, Mr Fenton called triple-0 and took these amazing pictures with his mobile phone.

He also stopped traffic until emergency services arrived at the scene.

“I arrived home just after the car caught fire and saw the smoke bellowing into the air,” he said.

“I ran up to see if the driver was okay. He was, luckily.

“He said he’d noticed some smoke coming from the engine bay at the rear of the car, so he pulled over.

“When he opened the bonnet, the car burst into flames.”

The Pontiac Fiero was a collector’s item, Mr Fenton said.

“There were only 100 vehicles ever imported into Australia,” he said.

“He (the owner of the car) said it was unmarked and only had 49,000 original miles on the clock.”
