Sport academy to visit Far North Coast

FORMER Wallaby and Fox Sports rugby commentator Rod Kafer is bringing his Sportek Academy to the Far North Coast.

Kafer is the chief executive and is linking up with former Waratahs coach Chris Hickey.

Hickey is living in Ballina and will be the coaching director of the academy at the Lake Ainsworth Sport and Recreation Centre in Lennox Head.

The program is for athletes in netball, rugby league, rugby union, soccer and surfing.

It provides study opportunities and is aimed at school leavers between 16-24 years of age.

"We're creating an opportunity for athletes where they can stay in the local area," Kafer said.

"There is a strong undercurrent of sporting potential on the Far North Coast and we want to nurture that.

"We create an educational framework where the students with a love of sport can get qualifications."

Kafer has set up another 10 academies across Australia.

Guest speakers have included former Wallabies captain George Gregan and Australian coach John Connolly.

"Basically we give kids with a love of sport the opportunity to further their education," Kafer said.

"We provide the skills that will help them in all walks of life."

There is an information session next Friday at the Lighouse Surf Club building in Ballina at 7pm.
