Spoilt for hamper choice

WHILE Christmas hampers prove to be a generous, festive gift, some can be quite expensive with too much padding, not enough product and an array of items not necessarily geared to your loved one's tastes.

The Big Pineapple Growers' and Fine Food Markets is promoting itself as a one-stop shop which can change all that, starting with the basket itself through to the widest variety of affordable foodstuffs.

It's also not rocket science - to create a hamper of direct, fresh, local and gourmet product, we put a seven-year-old to the test where she selected from indoor and outdoor stalls.

Spoilt for choice, young Sari Conti came up with a final product that was economical, bursting with variety and something she was proud to give her grandparents as an early Christmas Day gift.

Starting with a colourful Afro Pacific basket as her hamper base, she chose a pineapple from Hilltop Pines, and headed indoors to select wrapped posies of white Christmas, rum balls and a plum pudding from the Homemade Collection, packaged tea from the Chai Chic, chutneys, dips and pestos from d'Vine Flavours, gluten free products from The Saucy Spice Co. and Love my Food, nougats from Australian Nougat and gingerbreads from the Buderim Cookie Company.

"I wanted to give my grandma and granddad something they could enjoy for a long time, not just on Christmas Day," Sari said.

"I won't be here for Christmas so it means they can have their present early and my sister and I even get to try some of the treats with them.

"Grandma says with presents if she can't eat it, read it or wear it then she doesn't need it."

Creating a hamper at the market is a journey the whole family can share in the lead up to Christmas festivities.

Devising a hamper is also an ideal offering for business owners to their staff as a group.

The Big Pineapple Growers' and Fine Food Markets is open every Saturday from 6.30am to noon at Woombye.
