TV personalities including Lena Dunham and Maria Menounos greeted the flashing lights of the world's press photographers in vivid yellows, pinks and blues.

The 71st annual event marks the beginning of awards season in the US and celebrates the best in TV and film.

It's a more light-hearted affair compared to the Oscars and is once again hosted by comediennes Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

Today's star-studded arrivals follow a last-minute clean-up effort after a burst water pipe flooded the arrivals area.

Other celebrities played it safe with dark, solid colours, like Australia's biggest awards hopeful Cate Blanchett in a black lace Armani dress.

Dalby native Margot Robbie looked stunning in a cream gown with high slit and deep-v neckline.

Accessories, hair and makeup were simple and minimalist, allowing the focus to remain on strong colours and silouhettes.

There were a few questionable fashion choices, though, including Emma Watson's backless red gown under which she wore cropped pants.
