Speedway champ refines strategies

V8 DIRT Modified drivers will take to the track on Boxing Day for a spectacular event continuing the Driver to America series and beginning the Mr Modified three-race series, among other section feature races on the day.

Junior Sedan competitor Niki Youngberry, 15, has taken home two victories in her section this season.

The young driver has done exceptionally well, particularly considering she only began speedway racing last year.

Niki said she was looking forward to this Saturday's events.

"I'm pretty excited, it should be a good night of racing," she said.

"You always try different strategies in your heats, and in the feature you stick to which ever one worked best."

Niki had a track workout session at the Lismore Showgrounds yesterday, where the Boxing Day event will be held.

Her father Paul Youngberry is looking forward to Saturday's fixture just as much as his daughter.

"I raced the Street Stockers about 18 years ago for about seven years," he said.

"She's always driving ... she loves cars and she's always been involved with them particularly because I have a smash repair business myself."

He said speedway racing had worked out to be a great bonding exercise for them.

"A teenage girl wouldn't usually want to hang out with their Dad ... we do the repairs together, she's learning a lot about cars," Mr Youngberry said.

Brent Hall was also down at the Showground yesterday training for Saturday's fixture at Lismore Speedway.

He shares the lead with four other drivers in the Driver to America series, which continues until the season ends.

The Saturday meeting will be an important event for Mr Hall because it is also the opening round of the Mr Modified series, held over three main events.

"This is the first year it's gone back to a three race series," he said.

"The first round is a 50-lap feature race with an optional pit stop in the middle, however those that choose to take a pit stop go to the rear of the field so it's a bit of a gamble as to whether you think you're good enough to get back through the pack again.

"It's always a really exciting race because the endurance part of it brings a bit of an unknown element."
