Sophie stars in singles

CURRENT Australian under-17 singles rowing champion Sophie Dansie showed her top form when she won by several boat lengths in the under-19s singles event at the recent Northern Rivers Rowing Association Age Championships.

This event draws clubs from between Brisbane to Port Macquarie.

Sophie, representing Trinity Catholic College, Lismore, and the Lismore Rowing Club, will move up a division this year and will compete in the under-19 age group or Open events.

In not-so-ideal weather conditions, Sophie, 16, teamed up with rowers from the Lower Clarence Rowing Cub to compete in the under-19s doubles and quad scull events.

In all these events, she placed first and in the singles race Sophie took a commanding lead by the half-way mark and maintained the throughout the race.

For her top performances, Sophie was chosen in the under-19s squad to compete at the nationals in March in Victoria. Sophie will be in the single scull, double scull and quad as well as the school girls singles events.

The next regatta is on February 21 where the full Trinity rowing squad will be competing.

In the previous regatta in December at Grafton, several of the Trinity rowers showed great improvement and provided some exciting finishes. Trinity has produced many champion rowers over the years and the younger rowers have shown great promise for the future.
