SOLOMON Haumono has backed long-time friend Anthony Mundine in his quest to make a comeback to rugby league, despite his 41st birthday approaching on Saturday.

Mundine continues to call out long-time foe Danny Green for one last blockbuster fight, before he could go back to the 13-man game nearing 42 next year.

He is also coming off hip surgery in February.

That matters little according to Haumono.

"I think there's nothing 'Choc' can't do, because I've grown up with the guy," he told Australian Regional Media.

Mundine is already unpopular among many Australian sports fans for his outspoken and brash nature, with many looking forward to seeing him get "smashed" by today's 100kg-plus footballers.

The former Dragons star weighs just 70kg, and played his last game in the NRL way back in 2000.

It was a totally different era in those days when players were smaller and slower.

But Haumono, also 40 and a former league star turned boxer like Mundine, made a comeback to suburban footy with the Redfern All Blacks last year, in Sydney's inner-city region.

He believes age should not be a hindering factor for a gifted athlete such as Mundine, and the many doubters out there would only fuel his fire.

"In terms of old age (being a factor), I played rugby league last year with the Redfern All Blacks," he said.

While Haumono's experience was hardly the NRL, he is someone who knows Mundine better than most - his wife Margaret is Mundine's cousin.

And Haumono believes the former boxing world champion's talk of an NRL comeback is not just another publicity stunt.

"I can't speak for him (Mundine), but when he says something I'm a firm believer he can do it," he said.

"I know if 'Choc' puts his mind to something, he'll accomplish it."
