Softball: Wild weather can’t stop Dodgers and Condors

FROM scorching heat to lightning strikes, it was all happening with some sizzling softball in the Far North Coast competition at Albert Park, Lismore.

Dodgers Devils came out firing with the bat to defeat a revved-up Ballina Tiger Sharks 5-0 in Division 1.

A safe hit to lead-off batter Selina Atkinson and a bunt by Clare Busch set up Dodgers' first run.

Ballina's returning pitcher Johanna Presgave started proceedings on the mound and did a great job.

Ballina were unable to penetrate the Dodgers field led by excellent pitching from Shannon Holgate to Katie Martin.

With no errors, Ballina failed to advance a runner past second base.

Dodgers made a late charge to seal the win.

Fiona McLeod had a great game for Dodgers with a safe hit and a crucial catch at right field, while Sherilee Matthews (first base) and Bush (second base) were polished in the field.

Rous Rangers set the pace before Workers Condors emerged as 8-6 winners in the other game.

Solid batting from Nadine Toniello and aggressive base running put Rangers ahead.

Deidre Coe and Gaynor Hazlett took control in the third innings to put Condors on the board.

A line drive off the bat of Courtney Connell hit Rangers pitcher Loris Gordon, who had to be relieved by Amy Gordon.

Condors pitcher Leah Van Wettering kept the pressure on the Rangers batters, preventing any further runs.

With lightning about and a storm lurking, the game was called.

Woodburn Whippets defeated Workers Wild Turkeys 8-2 in a seven- innings game in Division 2.

Erin Rucker was outstanding at second base for Workers.

Lauren Forrester was strong at shortstop, combining well with third base Kate Foster for two outs.

Chris Costello at leftfield for Woodburn frustrated the Turkeys batters, taking two catches and throwing out a runner at second base.

Whippets gained the upper hand with four runs in the third innings. Turkeys dropped two catches and there were safe hits from Deosha Berry, Kasey Donnelly and Shantara Berry.

Rucker scored off the bat of Forrester in the fourth but it was all downhill for Turkeys after that.

Second base Sarah Colburn and shortstop Shantara Berry were the standouts for Whippets.

For Workers, Lyn McDonald pitched a great game and was well supported by Foster and Shay Kelly at first base.

Ballina Hammerhead Sharks proved too strong for Workers Mighty Ducks 21-11 in Division 3.

At the bottom of the second innings the score was 12-10 to Ballina.

Mighty Ducks tried hard with Nicole Shearman improving at shortstop with a catch and two outs.

Hammerheads batted strongly with Joe Bickel, Sue Dakin, Angie Bailey and Dee Vickers to the fore.
