Softball: There’s no catching these little Devils

DODGERS Devils scored eight runs in the first innings to set up a 9-0 win over Workers Condors in the Far North Coast Division 1 softball grand final on Saturday.

Workers sent Dodgers in to bat at Albert Park, Lismore, and that proved to be their first mistake.

They compounded it with several early errors in the field as Devils took the game by the scruff of the neck.

Condors started well with second base Bronwyn Gibson throwing out lead-off batter Selina Atkinson at first.

Shartarna Berry made first base with a safe hit to the outfield then the floodgates opened with missed catches and wild throws.

Workers catcher Erin Little ended the anguish by throwing out Berry attempting to steal second in her second bat of the innings.

From the second innings things settled down to the tight contest that had been expected.

Condors kept Devils to only one more run when Renee Blaikie hit a two-base hit to score Kayleen Shailes after Leah van Wettering had struck out Shannon Holgate.

Courtney Connell then took a high fly ball at right field to end Sherilee Matthews' bat and van Wettering threw out Kate Martin at first.

With two outs, Condors had a chance to score when Ashleigh Knight made first on a walk and advanced to third when Shay Kelly made base on an error at first.

But Dodgers quickly shut down the innings with second base Matthews throwing out Tracey Johnson at first for the third out.

Devils applied the pressure again with Tyndall scrambling to first. But a strike-out and catches to Ashleigh Knight at centre field and Laura Knight at shortstop sent Dodgers back without scoring.

Little was left shaking her head after Berry came running across for Dodgers to catch a long foul fly.

Centre fielder Atkinson came charging through to sweep up Laura Knight's hit to the outfield while Sonia Pope put out Samantha Green at first.

Throw-outs to first base by Workers pitcher van Wettering and shortstop Laura Knight along with a brilliant outfield catch by Connell kept Devils scoreless in their next innings.

Again Condors were left frustrated when Atkinson took a simple catch to send van Wettering back to the dugout, Tyndall threw out Gibson at first and Matthews did the same to Connell.

Dodgers' Kate Martin dashed towards first after a dropped third strike, only to see catcher Little's throw fly past for an out at first.

Tyndall hit nicely to the outfield but could not cross home plate after left fielder Shay Kelly caught Talarra Berry and Gibson caught Atkinson for the third out.

Workers' final chance came to nothing when Ashleigh Knight was struck out by Holgate and the next two batters were thrown out.

The win completed the major and minor premiership double for Dodgers Devils.
