Socceroos' date with Syria in playoffs confirmed

AUSTRALIA will play Syria at Sydney's ANZ Stadium in the second leg of their World Cup qualifying playoff on Octorber 10, Football Federation Australia has confirmed.

The Socceroos will travel to Malaysia - where the wore-torn country now plays its home games - on October 5 for the first leg.

Whoever wins the playoff will take on the fourth-placed CONCACAF team in a two-leg tie in November for a spot at the World Cup in Russia in 2018.

At this stage that game looks likely to be against the USA, Panama or Honduras.

FFA CEO David Gallop said ANZ Stadium would also be the venue for that match, should Ange Postecolgou's team get past Syria.

"It's obviously a happy hunting ground," Gallop said.

"We are all disappointed that we did not achieve direct qualification from our group but we are confident we can still make it to Russia.

"It's just a longer, harder road but we are focused on supporting Ange, his support staff and the playing group.

"We are experienced in the challenges of being on the road for away games but being at home brings our players in from the four corners of the globe and we expect it to be a big occasion for the football family and the nation.

Australia was forced into the Syria playoff after finishing third behind Japan and Saudi Arabia in their Asian qualification group.
