Soccer community rallies after flood

DESPITE the recent flood, Football Far North Coast is on track to host the final of the Tursa Employment and Training Anzac Cup and Callan McMillan Memorial Shield competitions.

Six divisions will be contested at Oakes Oval in Lismore this Friday night and Saturday, despite the significant impact of the recent flood.

FFNC general manager Steve Mackney applauded the fantastic flood clean-up work done by Lismore City Council staff, whose efforts he said had been extraordinary in recent weeks.

"Despite many LCC staff working very long hours to assist the broader community needs, they have also worked tirelessly to retrieve various sporting venues to a state where play can again proceed," Mackney said.

He urged the whole community to join soccer and its efforts to restoring some normality within the region, through sporting activity.

FFNC has determined that its marquee event this year should be a celebration of community solidarity and as such there will be no entry cost imposed.

Patrons are asked to make a gold coin donation upon entry to Oakes Oval, with funds raised being distributed to the clubs worst affected.

Further, in a wonderful gesture, Lismore Thistles Soccer Club has deferred its own opportunity to earn money from operating the canteen at the event.

Thistles has offered fellow club Lismore Workers FC, which incurred major loss and damage in the flood, the chance to recoup much-needed funds.

Well done to Thistles for this generous offer.

Patrons and players are reminded that conditions of entry to Oakes Oval include no alcohol consumed or brought into the facility, no glass containers and no smoking permitted.
