Slow crawl on cards for highway drivers

TRAFFIC authorities are expecting repeats this weekend of the delays that have plagued drivers on the Pacific Highway in recent days.

A spokeswoman from the Traffic Management Centre said traffic was queued up 8km near Woolgoolga yesterday and there were indications it would be continue today and tomorrow.

"People are returning from holidays so we are expecting delays between Woolgoolga and Coffs Harbour for southbound traffic," the spokeswoman said.

"In the past few days northbound traffic has also been heavy, and there have been delays there as well.

"We advise people to allow extra time for their journeys and to plan ahead.

"This could include using the New England Highway as an alternative route."

She said while the New England Highway was a longer journey lengthwise, it could take less time if delays were factored in.

"You also avoid the frustrations of waiting in traffic for up to 20 minutes," she said.

A car accident in Coral St, Corindi, held up traffic on the Pacific Highway yesterday morning.

Light traffic was diverted around the accident, but heavy vehicles were asked to park and wait for the obstruction to be cleared.

Emergency services personnel and police worked to clear the wreckage and the highway was re-opened after 11am.

Alternative route

If you're not worried about the extra kilometres, try the New England Highway.

The Traffic Management Centre advises there are never congestion delays and you will avoid the frustrations of being stuck in traffic queues.

It's also likely to cut some time off your trip.
