Slasher split man from ear to nose

A MAN has undergone surgery after his face was slashed during a midnight assault in Byron Bay last weekend.

Just before 1am on Sunday a fight erupted between a 36-year-old man and another man, both believed to be from the Gold Coast, in the Byron Bay CBD.

The fight occurred in the driveway of a bottle shop on Lawson St.

The 36-year-old man, who was understood to be visiting Byron Bay with his wife for a wedding, received a deep slash on his face, stretching from his nose to his ear.

A witness said the slash reached the bone.

It's believed the horrific injury was caused by a sharp ring or knuckleduster, worn by the other man involved in the assault.

Paramedics rushed to the scene and transported the 36-year-old to Byron Bay Hospital.

He was later transferred to Gold Coast Hospital to under- go facial surgery.

A police media spokesperson confirmed the incident occurred at Lawson St in Byron Bay and investigations were still under way.

Police refused to release any further information as it could hinder the investigation.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Statistics from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research show that the number of assaults in the Byron Shire decreased by 59 incidents between the 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 financial years.

Since the beginning of the year, there have been 148 assaults in the Byron Shire.
