Skip London for Nimbin

FORGET the London Olympics. A much more interesting athletic event will be held right here on the Northern Rivers when Nimbin hosts its own swimming pool Olympic Games this weekend.

The inaugural games will feature events such as the noodle relay, in which contestants will paddle while riding a foam noodle, bobbing for corks, duck-diving for rocks and a marathon swimming event.

There will be three synchronised swimming teams competing for gold.

A medal for the best Hawaiian print shirt is up for grabs.

Friends of Nimbin Pool's Sue Edmonds said the games were all about "highlighting the fact that the community love and use it (the pool)".

With last year's closure of Lismore Council's only other free public swimming pool, Lismore Lake Pool, Ms Edmonds said sending a strong message of support for the pool was important.

"It was a terrible shame, but it was like a lame duck," Ms Edmonds said of the closed pool.

Because nobody lived near the pool it became very difficult for people to protect it when council decided it should be closed.

The Nimbin pool has robust support from the 30-member Friends of Nimbin Pool, which formed three years ago.

Ms Edmonds said Nimbin pool was a very safe recreational place for people to come together. It was also used for rehabilitation and fitness.

The Nimbin community raised money to build the pool in the mid-1970s, but it is maintained by Lismore City Council.

Money raised from the games would be used to purchase a new bench seat and eventually pay for the construction of ramp access into the pool.

The games begin at 3pm tomorrow. Entry cost is $2, with proceeds going to the pool.

Nimbin Pool is on Sibley St behind the skate park and bowling club.
