Six of the best locals in NRL Auckland Nines
AT LEAST six Northern Rivers players will take part in National Rugby League teams at the annual Auckland Nines this weekend.
Casino Cougars junior Cody Walker will be one of the more experienced players on the field when he runs out for the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Souths could be one of the favourites with the likes of halfback Adam Reynolds and winger Alex Johnston in the team.
Elsewhere, Ballina junior Brian Kelly will wear a Manly jersey for first time after representing the Gold Coast Titans last year.
Kelly looked likely to play for the Tweed Seagulls in the Intrust Super Cup this season before he was snapped up by the Sea Eagles in November.
Meanwhile, Ballina junior Tyrone Roberts and former Grafton Ghosts fullback Anthony Don were both named in the Titans squad when it was announced yesterday.
Kyogle product Will Matthews will play for the Dragons while Ballina junior Nick Meaney was named in the Newcastle Knights team.
Lismore-raised David Mead will either play in the Nines for the Brisbane Broncos or in a trial game against the Cronulla Sharks at Redcliffe on Saturday.
It will be his first game in Broncos colours after eight years with the Titans.
Mead was cleared of a serious knee injury after colliding with a Brisbane teammate at training last week.
"David's injury was scanned but there isn't any cause for concern,” Brisbane high performance manager Jeremy Hickmans told Broncos media. "We expect he will be right to play in the trials. Fortunately the hard work he has done in the pre-season means missing a session or two will not impact him physically.”
The Sydney Roosters team has not been named (at time of print) but could include Paul Carter and Mitchell Aubusson.
If Carter is picked in the squad it would be his first NRL appearance since he was sacked by South Sydney last year.
Mullumbimby junior Cody Nelson was part of the Parramatta Eels team who won the Auckland Nines last year.
He has not been named in the Eels team for this weekend.
