Simone's murder probably done on spur of moment, expert says

PROFESSOR of Psychiatry and Gold Coast senior consultant, Dr Leon Petchkovsky, said the sort of person who might have killed Simone Strobel could have been in a delusional state and projecting his fantasies on to her.

This does not necessarily mean the person was mentally ill, Dr Petchkovsky explained.

He said that if Simone has been murdered, it would probably have been an opportunistic and unpremeditated event, carried out on the spur of the moment.

He said it was not possible to create a reliable profile based on the few facts that have been released.

"It may have been opportunistic, but you'd have to say the man's mental state (assuming it's a man) would have been a murder waiting to happen," Dr Petchkovsky said.

"Obsession breathes meaning into stuff that may be delusional. A man could have been projecting a fantasy on to this young woman, completely overlooking the fact there was a live, active, sentient being there.

"Who knows whom she represented to him. A little diva waiting to be ravished, or some despised female relative or authority figure that had to be attacked, or maybe precisely her innocence may have brought out the predator in him."

Does that mean the killer was mad?

"He's mad in the broader sense that we are all capable at different times of extraordinary acts, but technically, he may not be mentally ill at all," Dr Petchkovsky said.

What signs would the family or acquaintances of such a person notice about his behaviour?

"It's quite likely he would be an habitual sadist," Dr Petchkovsky said.
