Tearful Simon Black pulls the pin on AFL career

AN EMOTIONAL Simon Black has called time on his 16-year AFL career.

At a press conference at the Gabba this morning, Brisbane Lions record games holder Black said he had agonised over the decision to retire for the past five or six weeks after a knee operation.

But he said a doctor's report following the surgery , which suggested he could suffer permanent damage if he continued playing,  swayed him into making the decision to end his 322-game career.

"I probably ummed and aahed about 100 times but now I think it's about time I gave my body a rest," he said.

"I have mixed emotions about the decision and it's still a bit raw and fresh and that's why I am a bit emotional.

"It was a heart versus head decision and in the end the head won.

"I only made the decision yesterday afternoon about 5pm and I rang Leppa (Lions coach Justin Leppitsch)."

Black said he felt he could probably have played football at a high level next year and that's why he stewed on the decision for so long but he was comfortable he had made the right choice.

"I just sat out under the stars the other night and thought it was about time I gave my body a rest."

Brown kicked 171 goals in his 322 games for the Lions, after coming across from East Fremantle in 1997.

He won the Brownlow Medal in 2002 and was runner-up in 2007 and 2008.

Black won three premierships for the Lions and won the Norm Smith Medal in 2003. He was All-Australian in 2001, 2002 and 2004.

It is expected he will take up a coaching role with the Lions.
