Shrek on stage

THE world's best-known green ogre is the star in Ballina Players youth production Shrek the Musical Jr, which opens on Friday.

This family holiday event is based on the all-time hit, Oscar-winning animated film and Broadway musical.

Shrek (River Fullagar), pestered in his peaceful swamp home by fairy tale misfits, confronts the very short and very evil Lord Farquaad (Lachlan McGeary) of Duloc for help to remove them.

In exchange, he must rescue a princess, Fiona, from a dragon-guarded tower so she can marry Farquaad who will then become King.

Once rescued, Princess Fiona (Hillary Goodsell) travels to Duloc with Shrek and his talkative companion, Donkey (Sophie Brazenor).

The musical score includes favourites such as I'm a Believer, Make A Move and The Travel Song.

Geoff Marsh is director, with Sarah Shanahan-Jarvis assistant director and choreographer and Leanne Broadley musical director.

Shrek the Musical Jr will be staged at the Players Theatre from January 13-15 and 18-22, with matinees at 2pm and evening performances at 7pm.
