Showgirls prepare for challenge
A GROUP of thoroughly modern young women are prepared this week to be part of the showgirl competition at the 114th Bangalow Show.
The girls are being guided by chaperones Rosemary Hill and Lilly Jackson whose job it is to prepare the girls for the whole showgirl experience.
This year's contestants are Brooke Hansford,18 from Coorabell, Isobel Boyle, 18 from Bangalow, Ella Cathcart-Van Weeren, 19 from Myocum, Hannah Kelly, 20 from Bangalow, Anna Hutchinson, 19 from Bangalow and Kelly Quigley, 19 from Coorabell.
All the girls are currently working and most are planning to study at university next year.
All of them believe the showgirl competition is still vital and relevant in 2011.
Isobel Boyle is very excited to be competing as it's a bit of a family tradition, with several of her cousins competing unsuccessfully in the past.
"I reckon we are due for a win this year," she said.
Hannah Kelly sees the showgirl competition as a wonderful tradition that is very important for rural communities.
Hannah has just returned from a year in Tanzania working with children with disabilities recovering from surgery.
"It was a real eye opener and very visually confronting," she said.
The judging continues through the week with the winner announced at the show.
Bangalow Show is on Friday and Saturday.
