Shop local for those last gifts
CHRISTMAS is less than a week away and for those who haven't bought all their presents, I'm betting there is a little feeling of desperation right now.
The option of driving in to Lismore, Ballina or further afield is getting difficult to slate in, so this is a good time to decide to buy locally.
Whether you live in Broadwater, Coraki, Evans Head, New Italy, Wardell or Woodburn, there is a gold mine of local shops that can give you ideas to put under the tree.
There are also a number of home businesses that can provide a range of products.
They may advertise on community boards, newsletters or even in this paper.
The Cornerstore in Evans Head has just moved into Oak St and has a wide range of handicrafts made by locals that would suit all ages.
Teena Mettam, the force behind Teena's Vintage Designs which are sold in the Cornerstore, has been around craft all her life.
"My mother ran a craft shop, so I've been around craft items and making things all my life," she said.
"If there's anything that can be made from paper, I am the paper queen."
Many people will recognise Von Pickens from local markets where she has sold her fabric statues that now grace the Cornerstore shop.
"They are great ornaments and most are ideal for outside," she said.
If craftwork isn't your thing then check out your local stores to see what other items they have or if they do vouchers for coffees, meals, hairdressing, retail items, car services - the list is endless.
Also think outside the box and check out places on the internet like the Evans Head Classifieds Page or Coraki Classifieds Page on Facebook where many locals sell their goods and services or unwanted items.
You may be pleasantly surprised especially when you consider the petrol you'll save by shopping closer to home.
