Sheriff says gunman's Aussie girlfriend has questions to answer

FRIENDS of Australian "person of interest” Marilou Danley say she left America two weeks before the worst mass shooting in US history.

The former Gold Coast resident, an Australian citizen originally from the Philippines, was named by Las Vegas police in the aftermath of the shooting.

Her ID was reportedly used to book the Mandalay Bay hotel room from where her partner, gunman Stephen Paddock, opened fire.

The Courier-Mail understands Ms Danley left the home she shared with Paddock in Mesquite, Nevada a fortnight ago. She is in Tokyo, Japan, AAP reports.

In a media conference yesterday, Las Vegas sheriff Joseph Lombardo said Ms Danley had questions to answer after 59 concert-goers were killed and 527 injured in the horrific sniper attack.

Sheriff Lombardo said 16 assault rifles were found in Paddock's 32nd floor suite and a raid on the Mesquite home he and Ms Danley shared found 18 more guns, explosives and thousands of rounds of ammunition, as well as a quantity of ammonium nitrate in his car.

The sheriff dismissed reports Ms Danley was no longer a person of interest.

"We are continuing the investigation into that female,” he said.

"There are several questions that need to be answered ... but she is currently out of the country.

"We are making arrangements to contact her upon her return.”
