Vics rest exhausted Pucovski after WACA heroics

BATTING sensation Will Pucovski won't get the chance to back up his mammoth innings of 243 this week after being left out of Victoria's Sheffield Shield team for the clash with NSW starting Friday.

Victorian officials said Pucovski, 20, had failed to fully recover from the 313-ball innings which thrust his name in the conversation for a possible Test debut this summer and wasn't ready to go again.

His effort at the WACA last week, in Victoria's big win, was just his fourth Shield game and only his seventh innings but his second first-class century after making 188 against Queensland last summer.

Pucovski also became the youngest player since Ricky Ponting in 1994 to make a Shield double century and is one of only nine players ever to reach the mark before his 21st birthday.

He also has a history of concussion-related issues but his absence this week is believed to be just exhaustion from the first Shield innings of the summer.

"After his excellent performance in Perth it's unfortunate that Will is not available this week but we have a busy season ahead of us and want him to have time to rest and recover,"

Cricket Victoria General Manager Cricket Shaun Graf said.

Eamonn Vines will replace Pucovski in the team for the clash at the MCG.
