Shayne Neumann now calls for marriage equality

BLAIR MP Shayne Neumann has reversed his former stance against it and now supports marriage equality according to Australian Marriage Equality lobby group.

His support now brings the parliament just a handful of votes away from a majority, the AME said.

AME said Mr Neumann joined a growing number of people on the Labor right who supported marriage equality.

"Across the nation MPs are listening to the personal stories of their constituents and realising why marriage equality matters," AME national director Rodney Croome said.

In June, Neumann declared he was against marriage equality as a long-held position.

But in November, he came under fire for his view during a rally in Ipswich supporting same-sex marriage.

In response to the rally, Mr Neumann said it was highly probable that marriage equality would be a reality within 12 months of the next election.

"The truth is, I think we have seen a big change in the Australian public's view on this issue," he said in November.
